Vladimir Putin approved Russia’s updated nuclear doctrine.

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, on Tuesday accused Moscow of “completely irresponsible” nuclear threats after Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a new nuclear doctrine. TASR reports on this, according to Reuters and AFP reports.

“This is not the first time that Putin has played the nuclear game,” Borrell said after a meeting of defense ministers in Brussels. He added that “any calls for nuclear war are irresponsible.”

Putin on Tuesday approved the country’s updated nuclear doctrine, under which Russia could consider using nuclear weapons if faced with a conventional missile attack backed by a nuclear power. According to the doctrine, an attack by one country belonging to a coalition of states against Russia will be considered an attack by the entire coalition.

The decision came just two days after US media reported that US President Joe Biden had allegedly authorized Ukraine to use US long-range missiles against military targets inside Russia.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Borrell urged EU member states to join the United States’ decision to allow Ukraine to hit targets on Russian territory with long-range missiles, writes AFP. “It is fully in accordance with international law,” said the head of European diplomacy.
