Does milk help with ulcers or hyperacidity?
Why does milk soothe the stomach, but actually harm it? We can all imagine how the egg white milk nicely coats the inside of the stomach and calms the irritation. The idea that alkaline milk neutralizes the acidic environment of the stomach is not out of the question, but scientists have now also come up with the fact that this short-term solution can have long-term consequences. Stomach ulcers will even worsen and this is probably due to the fact that the balance of the stomach environment disturbed by milk encourages the organism to overproduce gastric juices.
Consumed milk will support the production of the hormone gastrin, which directly supports the secretion of stomach acid. It happens every time we drink milk, and it doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re creating problems by consuming milk.
But if you often chase away problems with stomach ulcers with milk, you can “throw” the balance of the stomach so much that you provoke the continuous production of a higher amount of stomach acids, which definitely does not help the ulcers.
If not milk, then what?
Full and semi-fat milks are particularly problematic, because the increased production of gastric juices is caused by the fat contained in dairy products. Some experts even believe that drinking milk too often can, on the contrary, contribute to the development of ulcers. So, if you have stomach problems, it is better to reach for skimmed milk or other foods.
In the case of recurring stomach problems, the negative effects of milk unfortunately outweigh the short-term positive ones. Instead of milk, potatoes or vegetables with a high fiber content, bananas, but also oatmeal, cooked chicken or fish are recommended. To drink, prepare chamomile tea, cranberry juice or a turmeric drink.
