United States President-elect Donald Trump announced this evening that he will nominate Mehmet Oz, the famous heart surgeon known for the television program “Dr. Oz Show”, to lead the Medicare and Medicaid health insurance programs.
Oz will lead the agency that oversees health insurance programs for millions of older, poor and disabled Americans.
“Dr. Oz will be a leader in encouraging disease prevention, so we will get the best results in the world for every dollar spent on healthcare in our great country,” Trump said in a statement.
“It will also reduce waste and fraud in our nation’s most expensive government agency, which accounts for a third of our nation’s healthcare expenditures and a quarter of our entire national budget,” he added.
Oz, who ran in 2022 in a failed bid to represent Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate, has openly supported Trump and in the last days expressed support for the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to the nation’s main health agency, the Department of Health and Human Services.
