Data shows that the level of fires increased 42% in 1 year, but decreased compared to September
Devastation due to fires in Brazil reached 51,770 km² in October 2024, according to data prepared by Map Biomas. The fires affected an area larger than that of the Latin American country Costa Rica (51,100 km²).
There was a 42% increase in the fire rate compared to the same month in 2023, when 36,213 km² were recorded. Despite this, there was a reduction of 51% compared to September 2024.

The biome most affected by the fires in October was the Amazon, with 38,032 km². Next is the Cerrado (9,337 km²).

Brazil recorded an area devastated by fires of 275,622 km² from January to October 2024. The value more than doubled compared to the same period in 2024, with a positive variation of 119%.
The year was marked by a historic drought, which facilitated the start of fires. This partly explains the increase in the devastated area.
The government authorized the fiscal framework for actions to combat fires. The government’s goal for 2024 is to eliminate the primary deficit in public accounts. In practice, revenues need to equal expenses. In other words, the initiative helps the economic team to meet the objective even when expanding spending on emergency measures.
