German Defense Minister highlighted that these acts are part of a ‘hybrid war’ strategy, but did not reveal who would be responsible

Recently, the Baltic Sea was the scene of attacks on underwater cables, which were classified as acts of sabotage by the Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius. The incidents affected two fiber optic cables: one that connects Germany to Finland and another that connects to Sweden has Lithuania. Pistorius highlighted that these attacks are part of a “hybrid” war strategy, but did not reveal who was responsible. Last Sunday, a communications cable between Sweden and Lithuania suffered damage, followed by a cut in a 1,200 km fiber cable in the early hours of Monday (18), near the Swedish coast.

Finnish operator Cinia reported that the rupture was caused by an “external force”, indicating the possibility of deliberate action. The situation generated a heightened state of alert among NATO member countries, including Sweden and Finland. Since the start of the Russian invasion in 2022, security in the region has become a growing concern, especially after the destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines, which was one of the most significant attacks on Baltic Sea infrastructure.

German authorities, during investigations into the gas pipelines, pointed to Ukraine as possibly responsible, although the case is still under analysis. The escalation of tensions in the region raises questions about the security of critical infrastructure and vulnerability to hostile actions.
