The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Wednesday the appointment of former acting attorney general Matthew Whitaker as the next US ambassador to NATO. Whitaker, a 55-year-old lawyer and lobbyist, served as acting attorney general of the United States between November 2018 and February 2019, under Trump’s first term, after Jeff Sessions resigned from the position. “Matt will strengthen relationships with our NATO allies and stand firm in the face of threats to peace and stability,” the Republican politician said in a statement. In addition, he noted that the new ambassador will “put America first,” the motto that Trump uses to promote a more isolationist foreign policy. According to the president-elect, Whitaker is “a strong warrior and a loyal patriot, who will ensure the advancement and defense of the interests of the United States.” Whitaker graduated from the University of Iowa, where he played on the American football team, the next president noted.
