Prime Minister, present at the G20 summit, warns that the principles do not fit with what is seen on the ground, in war.
The prime minister refused on Monday to comment directly on Washington’s call to Ukraine to use long-range American weapons against Russia, saying he was mainly concerned about diplomatic mechanisms for peace.
On the sidelines of the G20 summit, Luis Montenegro expressed concern: “More than commenting on this US position, What worries me most today is that we are not talking about peacewe are not talking about the diplomatic mechanism that has to be placed on the table”, he stated, highlighting that both the United States, Russia and the European Union are sitting at the same table at the G20 meeting.
The Prime Minister stressed that, for peace to be possible, “it is necessary value international law, humanitarian law”, namely through the United Nations reformas he defended at the last General Assembly of this organization, in September.
“We cannot continue to have the United Nations blocked by a Security Council where some of the countries that have permanent representation are tied to their own interest and therefore blocking any solution, including the implementation of decisions by the Security Council itself and the United Nations General Assembly”, he defended.
When asked if he felt cohesion and convergence in the countries participating in the G20 meeting, which brings together the world’s main economies, he responded positively.
“I think we principles there was a great confluence and convergence of positions. I would say that even the Russian Federation’s intervention from this point of view, with regard exclusively to the objective of having greater opportunities for developing countries, of combating hunger, of combating poverty, from that point of view was also a contribution worth noting,” he stated.
However, he pointed out, this position is after contradictory with the situation in land “particularly in the case of Russia’s direct responsibility for the ”, where there are “some obstacles that conflict with this objective”, he lamented.
This Tuesday, the Prime Minister participates in the last day of the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, which Portugal participated for the first time as an observer at the invitation of the Brazilian presidency, meeting at the end of the day with the Portuguese community.
