Most Brazilians see the country as racist, says Datafolha

According to the survey, 59% of Brazilians believe that prejudice against skin color predominates in the country

A Datafolha survey released this Wednesday (Nov 20, 2024), Black Awareness Day, indicates that the majority of Brazilians believe that Brazil is a predominantly racist country.

For 59% of those interviewed, the majority of the country is prejudiced against skin color, while 5% say that everyone is racist. 30% say that only a small portion discriminates against black people.

Among women, 74% stated that all or most Brazilians are prejudiced against black people. Among men, 53% consider the majority of the country to be racist.

The perception that racism has increased in recent years is greater among black people. In this demographic, 54% agree that discrimination is greater now compared to a few years ago. This is the same understanding as 37% of white people interviewed in the survey.

When asked about having suffered prejudice due to their skin color, the highest percentage also belongs to black people: 56%. Among mixed race people, this number is 17%.

Datafolha interviewed 2,004 people in 113 Brazilian cities from November 5th to 7th. The survey has a margin of error of 2 percentage points.

A survey carried out by in October this year revealed that 75% of Brazilians say that racism exists in Brazil, but only 33% of those interviewed admitted to having prejudice against black people. In 2020, 59% of those interviewed had denied discriminating against people based on their skin color. In 2024, that number dropped to 50%.

Among the regions of Brazil, the South has the highest percentage of respondents who consider themselves racist, with 41%. In the Southeast, 36% admit to discriminating against black people, followed by the Central-West, with 29% and the North and Northeast, with 27% each.

The PoderData survey interviewed 2,500 people between October 12th and 14th, 2024 in 181 Brazilian cities. The margin of error is 2 percentage points.
