The Minister of Defense, José Múcio, said that the investigation following Operation Countercoup, launched by the Federal Police (PF) last Tuesday (19), with the arrest of four military personnel and a federal police officer suspected of planning the murder of authorities in 2022, to carry out a coup in the country, it can show that the crimes were committed by “an isolated group”, and not by military corporations.

Among the group’s targets were Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who had just been elected president, his vice-president, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), and the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes.

“I want everything to be clarified to remove the fog of suspicion from the Armed Forces,” the minister told the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo. “The facts so far show that these were isolated actions, which have no relation to the Forces. I wish that all those who participated are held responsible for their actions and arrested”, added José Múcio.

The arrest warrants served by the Federal Police resulted in the arrest of four suspects of participation in a criminal organization that, according to the PF, had planned a coup d’état in 2022, with the aim of trying to prevent Lula from taking office as elected President of the Republic. .

PF pointed out conversations about an alleged plan to kill authorities in a messaging app

According to Federal Police investigations, the four soldiers and the federal police officer arrested in Operation Contragolpe were talking on a messaging app about an alleged plan to kill Lula, Alckmin and Moraes. It was Minister Moraes himself who authorized the Countercoup operation.

According to information from Folha de S. Pauloa document attached to the case records by police describes the possibility of “the use of poisoning or the use of [produtos] chemicals to kill Lula.” In the case of the STF minister, according to the same document, in addition to poisoning, the group would have considered using an “explosive device” to kill Alexandre de Moraes.
