The PT asked the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), to shelve the proposal that grants amnesty to prisoners for the acts of January 8, 2023. President Lula’s party argued that the project “is completely inappropriate and inconvenient for the democratic process and national peace.”

In the document, the party cited the bomb attack that occurred in Praça dos Três Poderes on the 13th and the Federal Police operation investigating an alleged plan to assassinate Lula, vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and minister Alexandre de Moraes , of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

The president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann (PR), and the leader of the party in the Chamber, Odair Cunha (MG), filed the request this Wednesday (20). “The recent and very serious events related to the object of deliberation of this Bill constitute an unquestionable loss of opportunity, so that it is necessary to archive it”, explained the party

For the PT, the attack and Operation Countercoup “point in the opposite direction to the objective” of the amnesty PL. Gleisi and Cunha highlighted that the “prospect of pardoning impunity” for those involved in the acts of January 8 “has been a powerful stimulus to extremist radicalization”.

“Keeping such a perspective alive, through the simple processing of the proposal, is completely inappropriate and inconvenient for the democratic process and national peace”, stated the PT members.

According to the party, the two facts “fully demonstrate the very serious criminal intentions of the commanders of the coup plot, commanders who could benefit from a possible amnesty for those convicted”.

After the operation, PT says that amnesty “represents no benefit” to the country

The PT stated that the episode is a “scandal” and that the amnesty PL “does not represent any benefit to the Brazilian people”. On Tuesday morning (19), the Federal Police arrested five people for allegedly planning a coup d’état after the defeat of then-president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the 2022 presidential elections.

“If the discovery of such a scandal does not harm and completely empty the ‘opportunity and convenience’ of this parliamentarian to discuss an amnesty for people involved in this type of occurrence, nothing else will make this Legislative House verify the error of the proposition, whose advancement does not represent no benefit to the Brazilian people”, stated Gleisi and Odair.

Among those arrested are four soldiers linked to the Army’s Special Forces, the so-called “black kids” and a federal police officer, who worked in Lula’s security during the government’s transition period:

  • Hélio Ferreira Lima: lieutenant colonel;
  • Mário Fernandes: reserve general, served as interim minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic in the Bolsonaro government, was also an advisor to deputy Eduardo Pazuello (PL-RJ);
  • Rafael Martins de Oliveira: major;
  • Rodrigo Bezerra de Azevedo: major;
  • Wladimir Matos Soares: federal police officer.

PT says the attack was an “unfolding” of “anti-democratic desires”

In the request, the party also classified the actions of Francisco Wanderley Luiz, author of the explosions in Brasília, as an “unfolding” of undemocratic acts. Known as Tiu França, he exploded artifacts in front of the STF headquarters building.

There was also an explosion in the car he used, which was parked near Annex 4 of the Chamber of Deputies. The 59-year-old man died near the “Justice” statue after detonating another artifact.

“This was not a mere minor incident, but an unfortunate development of the reprehensible anti-democratic desires that have haunted Brazilian society in recent years – which, if left to impunity, will materialize their damaging potential for institutions,” said the PT .
