The 14th Cinema and Human Rights Exhibition, organized by the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship, began yesterday, taking place at the Cine Teatro Recreio, Rio Branco/AC, from the 18th to the 21st of November. This year’s theme is “Living with Dignity is a Human Right”, highlighting the importance of human dignity in ensuring the quality of life and freedom for all people.
The program consists of 8 sessions with short and feature films including tributes to Cristina Amaral and Thiago Lourenço and various genres of films selected through an open public call that included productions from all regions of the country and which take place simultaneously in all the capitals of the various regions of Brazil. All sessions will be followed by a debate to open space for the community to discuss issues that are so important today, such as equality, social justice and respect for diversity.
All exhibitions are free and accessible to the public, including descriptive captions and LIBRAS windows, reinforcing the Exhibition’s commitment to inclusion.
The opening was attended by distinguished supporters of the cultural initiative: Prof. Dr. Minoru Kinpara, president of FEM (Elias Mausour Culture Foundation); the Prof. Dr. Micael Cortes, coordinator of the extension project at UFAC (Federal University of Acre); and Lígia Morais (General Coordinator of AEDH) representative of the Ministry of Human Rights.
The debate had reflective statements regarding awareness of social inequality in a broad aspect and an awareness of a position of greater respect for diversity; as the short film session began by contextualizing Afro-Brazilian religiosity with “Abá”; Soon after, it presented “Belos carnavais” telling about the death of samba artist Dadinho; At the height of this process, the theme of the film “Without Wings” highlighted the fragility of a black body, even if young, to be placed in ethical doubt just because of the tone of its skin; and ending with “Confluences”, inviting us to celebrate the collaboration of all Nego Bispo’s thoughts in life, as if his birthday were also ours, updating his concerns.
UFAC Theater student, Geovana Maria, also organizer of the exhibition, as a place to speak out for blackness, comments: “In “Without Wings” throughout the film, I felt a pang in my heart, as if everything was going to end badly. I even thought that the character would die like what happens in real life, where some dreams don’t come true, due to prejudice. Zuri, due to a shot fired by a police officer, when he was “shot” in the face, leaves us with doubts about being able to fulfill his dream of being a bulletproof hero”.
But, fortunately, that was not what happened and the entire context was given new meaning in an artistic outcome that fills our hearts with hope of breaking this pattern of violence through art.
Even the Humanities professor at the UFAC university course, Heidi Soraia Berg, also present at the exhibition, commented that “The difficult thing for the character, both in life and in the film, is not studying Mathematics, but being in the shoes of a black person who is discriminated against daily.”
The guest debater and Theater professor, Viviana Corletty, pointed out that “In “Bons Carnavais” the images overlap and mix like the bodies involved, both people and spaces, as if the culture of a place remained alive because the The relationship between the elements of the city is what pulses the meaning that that community gives to what is lived there”.
This was complemented by the partnership of mediator Tânia Villarroel who said that “The poetic dimension of the film was reminiscent of both the Festa da Querupita, in the Bexiga neighborhood and also the Festa do boi, in Morro do Querosene – which was born inside Tião Carvalho’s house – as if the samba singer’s burial erased the popular memories of some neighborhoods in São Paulo.
This exhibition was created with great care and care and deserves to be attended from beginning to end. Come to Cine Teatro Recreio, located in front of the traditional Gameleira on Senador Eduardo Aassmar street in the 6 de Agosto neighborhood, this week only.
Tânia Villarroel, Theater professor at UFAC (Federal University of Acre) and PhD student at PPGAC (Postgraduate Program) at ECA-USP (School of Communications and Arts at the University of São Paulo) in Theater Pedagogy.
