SR’s contribution to Havana on Tuesday symbolically directly on the grounds of the local Ministry of Food Industry, was handed over by Milan Zachar, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Slovak Republic to Cuba, with the participation of a representative of the World Food Program (WFP). TASR was informed about this by the communication department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic.

This year, due to the deteriorating availability of basic food, the Cuban government asked for help, especially for the most vulnerable groups of the population, including children under the age of seven. Slovak Minister of Foreign Affairs Juraj Blanár explained that Slovakia provided Havana with a financial contribution of 200,000 euros for this purpose through the WFP.

“We succeeded through joint procurement to purchase 40.7 tons of powdered milk, which was delivered to Cuba in November together with supplies from other states and organizations. I believe that our help will make it possible to at least partially contribute to the improvement of humanitarian conditions, as the situation on the island is critical also due to the recent extraordinary natural disasters,” said Blanár.

Slovak Ambassador Zachar stated that the Slovak aid comes at the right time, since Cuba is currently facing a difficult energy situationwhich, combined with the consequences of recent hurricanes and also earthquakes in the east of this island country, threatens the availability of food there. His words were also confirmed by the Cuban Minister for the Food Industry, Alberto Lóbez Díaz, adding that the communities most affected by climate disasters will benefit the most from powdered milk.
