“The only president who suffered an attack in this country”, says deputy when remembering Bolsonaro’s stabbing

The repercussions of the recent investigations into former president Jair Bolsonaro’s involvement in coup attempts in 2022 have generated diverse reactions in the Brazilian political scene.

This Tuesday (19), the Federal Police opened the way for a possible arrest of Bolsonaro, directly linking him to a plan to assassinate figures such as President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

The case, which involves an attempted coup d’état in January 2023, has been the subject of intense discussions, especially with the publication of a PF report that reveals conversations by senior military personnel, including a retired general, about the possibility of taking action to prevent Lula from taking office until the end of 2022.

However, federal deputy Colonel Ulysses, an influential figure and political ally of Bolsonaro, made a publication that resurfaces an old argument: the former president is, in Ulysses’ view, a victim of attacks and political persecution.

Ulysses’ post comes at a time when legal proceedings are increasingly closer to involving Bolsonaro in investigations into possible crimes against democracy, particularly actions related to January 8th.

In his publication, Ulysses argues that Bolsonaro is the only Brazilian president to suffer an attack and suggests that the accusations against him are, for the most part, unfounded narratives.

He also remembers the case of Adélio Bispo, who made an attempt on Bolsonaro’s life during the 2018 campaign, but remains free. For Ulysses, the situation is a clear demonstration of political persecution and an attempt to weaken the former president. Coronel’s post also appears to minimize Bolsonaro’s involvement in the coup events, suggesting that he has been unfairly attacked.

Ulysses’ caption states: “The only president to suffer an attack in this country. The rest is narrative, inference and political persecution. Detail: Adélio released and no one arrested.”

However, as the Federal Police advances in investigations, including Bolsonaro’s involvement in planning radical actions, it becomes clear that the narrative that tries to exonerate the former president is met with resistance.

The facts are being revealed and authorities, such as Minister Alexandre de Moraes, are making it clear that there will be no impunity.

Bolsonaro’s case and the possible legal developments are part of a complex web of political tensions, investigations and reactions from figures close to the former president.

Now, the doubt that persists is how far the former president’s path will take the investigations, and whether he will, in fact, be held responsible for his participation in the coup plans.
