PF operation investigates plan drawn up after the 2022 elections by a group of military personnel that included the death of Lula, Alckmin and Alexandre de Moraes
The president of the (Supreme Federal Court) and the (National Council of Justice), Luís Roberto Barroso, spoke this Tuesday afternoon (19.Nov.2024) about the plan for a possible attempted coup d’état and the assassination of the elected president (PT) and vice president (PSB). He called the act “crime” and a “throwback”.
“We dawn today with shocking news about a possible coup attempt that would have occurred in Brazil after the last presidential elections […] We were closer than we imagined to the unimaginable. What can be said at this moment is the coup, the attack against institutions, against the public agents that make up them”, he said when reading the note before the CNJ session this Tuesday afternoon.
Barroso also stated that the case has nothing to do with ideology, but only with “an anti-democratic feeling and disrespect for the rule of law“. He cited the independence of the attorney general’s office and the “seriousness” of the Federal Police in investigating the case. “It is encouraging to know that republican institutions are functioning harmoniously, as they should be in a democracy,” said the president of the STF.
Upon finishing reading the note, Barroso also made his own comment, in which he said that Brazil “has already overcome the delay cycles“from a vision”undemocratic” that “I can’t stand the fact that someone who thinks differently than me was elected”. “It’s a huge step back to know that we were close to something like this”, he concluded.

THE PF OPERATION
The PF (Federal Police) targets suspects of being part of a criminal organization responsible for planning, according to investigations, a coup d’état to prevent the elected government from taking office in the 2022 Elections.
The targets are the so-called “black kids”, a group formed by Special Forces soldiers, and investigate an execution plan by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and his vice, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB).
Still according to the corporation, the group also . The crimes investigated, according to the PF, constitute, in theory, the violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, a coup d’état and a criminal organization.
Three search and seizure orders were issued in Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, Amazonas and the Federal District. 15 measures were determined, such as the prohibition of contact between those investigated, the delivery of passports within 24 hours and the suspension of the exercise of public functions.
One of the targets of Operation Countercoup, as it is being called, is retired general Mário Fernandes. He was executive secretary of the General Secretariat of the Presidency in the government of (PL). He was also an advisor in the office of the deputy and former Minister of Health (PL-RJ).
Also targeted by the warrants were lieutenant colonels Hélio Ferreira Lima, Rafael Martins de Oliveira and Rodrigo Bezerra de Azevedo, and federal police officer Wladmir Matos Soares. All were subject to preventive detention and a ban on maintaining contact with other people being investigated, as well as a ban on leaving the country, with the consequent surrender of their respective passports.
In , the PF said that a criminal organization “a high level of technical-military knowledge was used to plan, coordinate and execute illicit actions in the months of November and December 2022”.
The plan was being called “Green and Yellow Dagger” and would run on December 15, 2022.
“The planning prepared by those investigated detailed the human and military resources necessary to trigger the actions, using advanced military operational techniques, in addition to the subsequent establishment of an ‘Institutional Crisis Management Office’, to be integrated by the investigated themselves for the management of institutional conflicts arising as a result of actions”said the PF.
