Prisoners in Operation Contragolpe used swear words and expressions that, according to the PF, suggest the development of a plan to attempt a coup d’état.
Operation Countercoup, by the (Federal Police) on Tuesday (19.Nov.2024), intercepted a series of exchanges of messages between military personnel who were allegedly hatching a plan to kill the president (PT), the vice-president (PSB) and the minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) Alexandre de Moraes.
The content of these messages includes expressions that could lead to the interpretation that it was a plan to attempt a coup d’état. During the exchanges, the military said, for example: “four lines of the Constitution are the shit” e “let’s go for anything.” They also cited the former president (PL) on several occasions, as if they were waiting for an order to act.
The messages are also full of profanity, especially from Brigadier General Mário Fernandes. In audios transcribed by the PF, the soldier speaks “fuck” a total of 53 times. Other characters also swear, but not as often. “Fuck” is said 4 times and “Shit” another 3 times. Here is the PF document containing the messages (PDF – 17 MB).
Read below a list of the most incisive messages and their authors:
- “Four lines is awesome” – Colonel Reginaldo Vieira de Abreu
On November 5, Colonel Reginaldo Vieira de Abreu sent an audio to Mário Fernandes in which he urged his companion to continue with the plan that the military had been working on. The PF related the term to an expression frequently used by Bolsonaro to refer to an action within the parameters of legality (“four lines”).
“I’m sorry for the expression, but four lines is fucking awesome. Four lines of the Constitution are the shit. We are at war, they are winning, it is almost over and they didn’t fire a shot due to our incompetence. Our incompetence, that’s it. We are like the frog, the story of the frog in hot water. You put the frog in hot water, it doesn’t feel the temperature of the water change and it keeps getting bigger, bigger, bigger when you see it’s dead. And that.”
- “Brazilian Spring” – Colonel Reginaldo Vieira de Abreu
On the same day, Reginaldo sent another message to Fernandes. This time relating the plot to the “Arab Spring” episode in which there were violent demonstrations that resulted in the deposition of leaders of 5 Arab countries.
“I’m going to send you a document for you to read talking about the Arab spring that happened, where the population moved through social media and governments blocked social media, so outside countries made providers available for the spring to occur. Arabic. There has to be a Brazilian spring.”
- “Forced bar” – Brigadier General Mário Fernandes
On November 4, General Mário Fernandes sent an audio to General Luiz Eduardo Ramos Baptista Pereira, then chief minister of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, whom he refers to as “kid preto”. In the message, it says that you need to give a “forced” to move forward with the operation that aimed to prevent Lula from assuming the Presidency.
“But Kid Preto, damn it, please, you have to fight the high command, man. [..] We can’t take this shit anymore, it’s fucked up. It’s fucked up. And another thing, even if it is to publicize and inflame the masses. So that she stays on the streets, and then yes, damn, maybe that’s what the high command, what the defense wants. The popular outcry, as it was in 64. Because as you said, damn, a good part of the high command, at least in the army, is not very willing, right? Or it won’t start intervention, unless, damn, the start is made by society, dammit.”
- “Let’s go to war, let’s go to anything” – Helio Osorio Coelho
On November 4, 2022, a person identified as Hélio Osorio Coelho, a supposed evangelical leader, sent an audio to Brigadier General Mário Fernandes claiming to be “soon to go to war” contra “communists”. In the message, the interlocutor says that he is awaiting a position from then-president Bolsonaro on taking some type of action against Lula’s recently elected government.
“We’re going to war, we’re going to fight anything, understand? I’m willing, you know, to fight for my country, because I have several friends here, I have nephews, little nieces, and I don’t want to see, you know, I can’t see my friends, their children, my relatives, under the judgment of these communists, right? We can’t, we can’t, we can’t see that. We, as military personnel, cannot see this. So, we are there, whatever the president decides, my group here has already spoken, my group here of pastors, who are the leaders, has already spoken, whatever the president decides, we will embrace the cause, we will embrace . The president has our full and unrestricted support.”
- missed opportunities – brigadier general Mário Fernandes
On December 8, General Mário Fernandes sent an audio to Bolsonaro’s former aide-de-camp, Mauro Cid, to suggest that the military man talk to Bolsonaro to choose a time to put the plan into practice. In the message, Fernandes calls Lula a “bum” and declares that they have already lost many opportunities to act.
“Cid, good night. My friend, first of all I’m sorry for bothering you so much today. But damn, we can’t miss this opportunity. It’s two things. The first, during the conversation I had with the president, he mentioned that the 12th, due to the vagabond’s diploma, would not be a restriction, that this can happen, that any action we take can happen until December 31st and everything. But damn, right then I said, oh man, but as soon as possible, we’ve already lost so many opportunities. And then, meditating here at home, I wanted, damn it, you would suddenly pass on to him two aspects that I raised in relation to this. From next week onwards, I mentioned this to him, one of the two, either the street demonstration movements, they will either fade away or they will intensify”.
