The data is part of the third edition of the report “Armed Violence and Racism: the role of firearms in racial inequality”, a text that aims to provide an overview of the impact of armed violence on the lives of Brazilian men. Between 2012 and 2022 alone, Brazil recorded the deaths of 417,000 men as a result of firearms. The most affected age group is 20 to 29 years old, which corresponds to 43% of total deaths. In 2022, the general rate of male firearm homicides was 32.2 per 100,000, with even more worrying numbers among young people: 57.2 for the 15 to 19 year old age group; and 89.3 for those aged 20 to 29.
Furthermore, the data also shows that black men represent 68% of victims who seek care in the health system due to armed attacks. Thinking about the number in the country’s regions, the Northeast stands out as the region with the highest homicide rate, reaching 57.9 per 100 thousand men. In 46% of cases, the perpetrators of the attacks are unknown, while 7% of incidents involve the participation of police officers.
