Filmmaker José Padilha premieres this Thursday (21) at CasaFolha, the . He will teach “The art of telling stories”, the first time he offers an online course about his experience leading audiovisual productions.

In the filmmaker’s classes, he goes through all the stages of an audiovisual production, from planning the filming to launching the work. He teaches, for example, how he develops his scripts, what his creative process is like and how he creates remarkable characters like Captain Nascimento, from “Tropa de Elite”.
It also teaches how to shoot scenes that move the audience, how to direct the narrative and how to edit the film; dealing with established or novice actors, dialoguing or fighting with the studios and managing the budget, among many other skills that a director, in his view, must have.
“And I’m going to try, while I’m doing this, to share a little of the experience I had. I didn’t study cinema at any university. I learned by doing”, says Padilha in .
With more than 20 years in cinema, he has been a director, screenwriter and producer. He has made films, documentaries, series and . He has worked both independently and with major studios, in Brazil and in Hollywood.
In his debut as a director, he released the documentary “Ônibus 174”, in which he records the hijacking of a bus in Rio de Janeiro, in June 2000. He won more than 20 international awards with the feature film, , the highest honor in television American.
In 2007, , a work that marked the Brazilian film industry and guided social debate with the iconic captain Nascimento. For the director, the fiction film showed what was shown in “Bus 174”.
While the figure of the brutal police officer sparked controversy in Brazil, the Berlin Festival, one of the most important in the world, was the Golden Bear.
Three years later, Padilha completed what he called a trilogy with “Tropa de Elite 2 – The Enemy Now Is Another”. Captain Nascimento’s saga earned him records: in 2010 and in , surpassing “Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands”, which had remained in first place since 1976.
Backed by his own numbers, Padilha left for Hollywood, where he became involved in international successes and million-dollar productions, such as the remake of the feature film “RoboCop” and the series “Narcos” and “The Mechanism”, on Netflix.
He uses several moments from his career to illustrate what he thinks about audiovisual productions. “Everything I know comes from the interpretation and understanding I had of my work, while I did it, while I worked.”
The filmmaker’s debut at CasaFolha marks the inauguration of a new journey of exclusive courses focused on communication and creativity. There will be classes on public speaking, persuasion, writing and photography, among other topics.
The “Communication and Creativity” journey adds to the other two that are already available on CasaFolha.
One of them, called “Personal Transformation and Well-Being”, explores themes focused on balance and human development, with courses on nutrition and exercise, meditation, care for aging, quality of sleep and raising children.
In one of the courses, gerontologist Alexandre Kalache, former director of the WHO (World Health Organization), follows a mantra that he repeats: “The sooner you start preparing for old age, the better — but it’s never too late too much”.
