The Ministry of Defense sealed an agreement with the economic team to reduce spending on military pensions, as part of the package that the Treasury is preparing to control the trajectory of public debt. The information was published on Wednesday by the newspaper Estadãoand later confirmed by the G1.

Among the measures would be the creation of a minimum age of 55 years for the paid reserve, with a transition period. Currently, the criteria for retirement is based on length of service, requiring at least 35 years.

The measures, according to the newspaper, will be part of the package of cuts that the Ministry of Finance is preparing to strengthen the new fiscal framework and contain the growth of public debt. This is expected to be the main topic of the meeting between Finance Minister Fernando Haddad and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, scheduled for 3pm this Thursday (21)

Also according to the newspaper, the agreement progressively establishes the minimum age of 55 years for transfer to the paid reserve. Today that age is 50.

It also foresees the end of the so-called “fictitious death” – a situation in which soldiers expelled from the Armed Forces for crimes or bad behavior guarantee their families the right to receive a pension. With the change, the military’s family will only be entitled to confinement assistance, as provided for in Law 8,112/90 for public servants.

The contribution of soldiers from the three Forces to the Health Fund will be set at 3.5% of their remuneration until January 2026.

Furthermore, once the pension has been granted to beneficiaries of the 1st order (spouse or partner and children), successive granting to beneficiaries of the 2nd and 3rd order (parents and sibling dependent on the soldier) will no longer be permitted.

Last week, Haddad said that the measures and the only thing missing was an agreement with the military.
