Marnick Vermijl was considered a promise in the final years of the ‘Alex Ferguson era’ at Manchester United. But, almost a decade later, the Belgian no longer cares about football. After hanging up his boots at the age of 32, he chose to pursue a career far removed from football: today, his job is as a postman. And the former player couldn’t be happier with his choice.
“I was fed up with professional football. You are very dependent on the coach you have. Finding pleasure was also a big factor for me,” he said in an interview with newspaper Het Belang van Limburg.
After leaving United at the beginning of 2015, Vermijl played for Sheffield United, Preston North End and Scunthorpe, in England, as well as MVV, in the Netherlands, and Thes Sport, in Belgium. Until he decided to retire last season.
“As a postman, I have to wake up at four o’clock, but now I’m home around noon and I can pick up the kids from school every day. That’s a luxury,” he celebrated.
