The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested a man on Wednesday suspected of having set fire to a residence and a vehicle hours earlier in the city of Portimão, in the district of Faro, it was announced this Thursday.
In a statement, the security force says that the 51-year-old man was responsible for a fire that destroyed a two-story house early Wednesday afternoon, and that he was given a court order to abandon it.
The suspect, says the PJ, would have acted “motivated by revenge”.
Fighting the fire in the house caused injuries to a volunteer firefighter from Portimão, the note reads.
According to the police, the detainee was also responsible for another fire, an hour later, this time in a vehicle near one of the beaches in the municipality of Portimão.
The suspect was located and detained “on the same day”, following the investigation that began after the fires and which allowed the collection of “relevant evidence”, explains .
The man will be brought before the court to be heard in the first judicial interrogation and for the application of possible coercive measures, in an investigation supervised by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Portimão, he concludes.
