O end of 5% salary cut of political office holders, imposed by the troika 14 years ago, is about to be approved during the vote on the State Budget in the specialty. The most consensual proposal, led by the PS, foresees that the measure will only be applied to future mandates, with effect from 2025.
Although the PSD has defended the immediate entry into force of the measure, the socialist proposal has greater parliamentary support and the social democrats are willing to approve the socialist measure. The PS proposes that the cut be eliminated for terms starting after the law came into force, avoiding benefiting politicians currently in office, says the .
The PS and PSD-CDS proposals have generated different reactions. Enough, BE and PAN will vote against both, while Liberal Initiative (IL) and Livre support the idea of applying the measure only to future mandates.
The Left Bloc speaks out against any proposal as other troika austerity measures are not reversedsuch as severance pay and increased vacation days. The PAN, in turn, criticizes the lack of priority in discussing the measure, considering it unnecessary in a context of other national emergencies.
The PS proposal foresees that the elimination of the cut come into force in 2025possibly benefiting Madeirans who are elected if there are new early elections in the autonomous region. Mayors could also be considered as early as 2024, given the calendar of municipal elections.
The president of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), Luísa Salgueiro, praised the initiative, highlighting that the end of the cut restores respect for the role of mayors, an old demand of the ANMP.
IL presented a parallel suggestion: linking salary increases for public office holders to the growth of the average salary in the country. The party also defends updating the nominal value of the President of the Republic’s salary, which still appears in shields in the legislation.
