The leader of the Chamber, (MG), nominated the writer, author of the book, to receive the award, granted to personalities and entities that have provided relevant services to the Legislature or to Brazil.
According to the decoration rules, each party leader can nominate a personality or entity to receive the medal — members of the board of directors can honor two.
In justification, Odair Cunha states that Marcelo Rubens Paiva’s artistic and intellectual production helps “to tell the country’s recent history in a profound and compelling way”.
“The set of his work, in addition to being of great relevance in the national cultural scene, helps the public to know and not forget what arbitrariness and authoritarianism in politics are capable of causing”, he writes.
The PT member also remembers that it has just been made into a film, starring , and directed by . The work tells the story of the disappearance of the writer’s father, the deputy impeached by Rubens Paiva, and his family’s resistance.
“Throughout his public life, Marcelo has stood out for demonstrating openly in favor of democracy and the rule of law, against all types of social injustice.”
