The party sent this Wednesday, 20th, to the president of the Chamber, (PP-AL), a request to shelve the bill that provides amnesty to those convicted of the invasion of the headquarters of the three Powers in the attacks of January 8, 2023. The party argues that it is “inappropriate” and “inconvenient” to continue processing the proposal in Congress after the revelations by the Federal Police about an assassination plan drawn up in 2022 against the president, vice president and minister of the Federal Supreme Court ().

The amnesty project was almost voted on in October by the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ), due to pressure from Bolsonaro parliamentarians. However, Lira withdrew the proposal from the collegiate and forwarded it to a special committee, which prolonged the processing time. “In addition to demonstrating the very serious criminal plot of the coup leaders, who could benefit from the proposed amnesty, the prospect of pardon or impunity for those involved has served as a stimulus to far-right extremist individuals or groups”, says a note signed by the president of the PT, , and by the leader of the party in the Chamber, (MG).

The amnesty became an issue regarding Lira’s succession in the Chamber. In the negotiations to support the deputy (Republicanos-PB), favorite to win the election of the Board of Directors in February, the PT asked for a commitment to shelving the project. The PL, the former president’s party, defended the advancement of the text. So that the issue did not contaminate the succession process, Lira warned that she would resolve the issue this year. The promise paved the way for both the PT and PL to embark on Motta’s candidacy.

In the request sent to Lira, Gleisi and Odair ask for the amnesty project to be shelved “due to the loss of opportunity”. PT members argue that the president of the Chamber has the power to shelve a legislative proposal ex officio, that is, by his own decision.

“The recent and very serious events related to the object of deliberation of this Bill constitute an unquestionable loss of opportunity, so that it is necessary to archive it”, says the request.

The plan to kill Lula, Alckmin and Moraes was revealed this Tuesday, 19th, by the PF in Operation Countercoup. Retired general Mário Fernandes, a former advisor to the Bolsonaro government, was arrested; Hélio Ferreira Lima, Rafael Martins de Oliveira and Rodrigo Bezerra de Azevedo, all soldiers from the Army Special Forces, known as “black kids”; and Wladimir Matos Soares, federal police officer. They are suspected of planning a coup d’état after Bolsonaro’s defeat to Lula in the 2022 elections.

According to the PF, General Braga Neto, Bolsonaro’s former Minister of Defense, participated in a meeting at his residence on November 12, 2022. On that occasion, according to investigators, the plan called “ Green and Yellow Dagger.” The PF states that the plan began on December 15, 2022, but ended up being aborted.

“The biggest beneficiary of the crimes and the coup would be Jair Messias Bolsonaro. And now they want to say he had nothing to do with it? Brazil will only have peace and will only be free from far-right terrorists when they all pay for their crimes, starting with the boss”, published Gleisi on his profile on X (formerly Twitter).

In the document sent to Lira, the PT also mentions the attack that occurred on the 13th in Praça dos Três Poderes, when a man called Francisco Wanderley Luiz exploded bombs in front of the STF and in an area close to the Chamber of Deputies. He died at the scene. In a statement to the PF, Francisco’s ex-wife, Daiane Dias, revealed that the plan was to murder Moraes.

On the 14th, one day after the attack in Brasília, the PSOL also asked Lira to shelve the amnesty project. This Tuesday, the 19th, the party held an action in the Chamber against the project and defended the arrest of Bolsonaro, who is being investigated for possible participation in the coup plans.

The act was attended by PSOL deputies Chico Alencar (RJ), Glauber Braga (RJ), Ivan Valente (SP), Luciene Cavalcante (SP), Luiza Erundina (SP), Sâmia Bomfim (SP) and Tarcísio Motta (RJ) . PT parliamentarians Elton Welter (PR), Erika Kokay (DF) and Rogério Correia (MG) were also present.

The left-wing deputies gathered in front of a bust in honor of Rubens Paiva, a former PTB deputy who was impeached during the military dictatorship and murdered after being arrested by the military. Parliamentarians also erected a poster for the film I’m Still Here (2024), which tells the story of the Paiva family.

“The demonstrations continue that there is a great plot, a great organization that involves civilians, military personnel, parliamentarians and businesspeople who are not satisfied with the democratic freedoms hard won by all those who fought against the civil-military dictatorship, who are not satisfied with the result of the elections that gave victory to President Lula”, said Sâmia Bomfim.

“This figure cannot remain at large,” stated Erundina, when defending Bolsonaro’s arrest.
