Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring Breivik should not be paroled from prison. He did not distance himself from his radical political views and, combined with his narcissistic and antisocial personality traits, still there is a high risk that he will commit new acts of terrorism. Prosecutor Hulda Olsen Karlsdóttir said this during the final day of the trial in Ringerike prison, according to the Norwegian agency NTB. TASR informs about it based on the report of the DPA agency.
The court decides on Breivik’s second request for parole. According to Karlsdóttir, the prosecutor’s office is of the unequivocal opinion that his second request should also be rejected. “There is no other perpetrator in Norway who has committed such serious acts. Even if we look at the past,” stated the prosecutor.
On July 22, 2011, Breivik committed the most serious crime in Norway’s post-war history. First he planted a bomb in the government quarter in Oslo – the explosion killed eight people. Later he moved to the island of Utöya, located approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Oslo. Dressed in a fake police uniform, he shot dead 69 mostly young people there, who were at the summer camp of the youth organization of the Social Democratic Labor Party (AP). He justified the mass murder with right-wing extremist and Islamophobic motives.
In 2012, he was sentenced to 21 years in prison, at the time the most severe punishment in Norway. The court can extend it if Breivik is considered a threat to society. Since then, he has been kept separately from other prisoners for more than 12 years.
After serving the first ten years of his sentence can Breivik request early release at regular intervals. He did it for the first time in early 2022, but failed. Even this time, his chances are slim. The date when the court will decide on his second request is not yet known.
