US President-elect Donald Trump has announced that he will nominate billionaire professional wrestling mogul Linda McMahon as secretary of the Department of Education, an agency he has promised to dismantle.
The billionaire is seen as relatively unknown in educational circlesalthough he expressed support for schools created by parents and their right to choose their children’s educational establishment.
Linda McMahon was part of the Connecticut Board of Education in 2009, and spent several years on the board of directors of Sacred Heart University, in the same North American state.
During Trump’s first term in the White House, between 2017 and 2019, the Republican led the Small Business Administration.
She also ran twice for the Senate, the Upper House of the US Parliament, in the state of Connecticut (northeast), without being elected.
After his time in the Trump administration, McMahon became chairman of the ‘America First Policy Institute‘, a think tank created by Trump supporters and former officials.
Now, it is yet another controversial bet by Trump for his future team in the White House.
“Making America number one in education”
“Linda will use her decades of leadership experience and deep knowledge of both education and business, to empower the next generation of American students and workers and to make America number one in education in the world”, Trump announced in a statement.
The president-elect also highlights that “Linda will fight tirelessly” to bring more educational freedom to all US states and to “empower parents to make the best educational decisions for their families”.
The businesswoman became known for being presidente da World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) which organizes the lucrative and popular professional wrestling championships in the USA.
She founded WWE with her husband, Vince McMahon, who stepped away from the sport after being linked to allegations of sexual assault and human trafficking.
There are other members of the team chosen by Trump who are also associated with suspicions of a sexual nature, such as the congressman who was chosen to be attorney general.
