Where to dispose of light bulbs? The answer to this question is not clear-cut, as it depends on the type of specific fluorescent lamp. We present to you a guide to their responsible recycling.
In the past, conventional light bulbs were the standard and their disposal was not an issue – they ended up in the mixed waste bin. Today, although they have largely been replaced by energy-saving alternatives, they can still be found in some household appliances. Despite their simple design, do not dispose of them in glass or metal containers. Throw them only in mixed waste. You can also take them to electronic waste collection points.
Although halogen energy saving bulbs are similar to conventional bulbs, they require a different disposal method. It is recommended to protect them from breaking and to take them to the collection point of electronic waste.
Fluorescent lamps, which contain harmful mercury, are even more demanding. Throwing them in the normal waste is not only harmful to the environment, but also illegal. In the event of their breakage, special measures must be taken.
LED bulbs should be properly secured and taken to the electrical waste collection point.
It is best to hand over used light bulbs at collection points operated by waste management companies. Even large-scale stores must operate such collection points and accept used light bulbs from customers.
In addition, public institutions often offer special containers for hazardous waste, such as batteries or light bulbs.
