After losing the elections, far-right Jair Bolsonaro was replaced by left-leaning Lula da Silva. The list of accomplices to the coup attempt also includes three elite soldiers and a policeman, who were arrested on Tuesday for the attempted murder of Lulu and one of the Supreme Court judges.

Brazilian police on Thursday charged former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others with a coup attempt to prevent current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from taking office in 2022. TASR informs about it according to the Reuters and AFP agencies.

The group planned a coup attempt

According to police, investigators have concluded that Bolsonaro and 36 other individuals planned the “violent overthrow of a democratic state.” In a final report sent to Brazil’s highest court, they called for their indictment.

The coup attempt was allegedly planned by the group in the last months of Bolsonaro’s term of office, which ended at the end of 2022. The far-right Bolsonaro was replaced by the left-leaning Lula after losing the elections.

The list of accomplices to the coup attempt also includes three elite soldiers and a policeman, who were arrested on Tuesday for the attempted murder of Lulu and one of the Supreme Court judges.

He accused the judge of breaking the law

AFP reminds that Brazil’s Attorney General will decide whether the evidence is sufficient to bring criminal charges. The accused face up to 12 years in prison for attempted coup d’état.

The former president denied the accusation. On social media, X wrote that he would fight a legal battle and accused the judge in charge of the case of breaking the law.

The police statement did not indicate a direct link between the coup attempt and the riots that took place in the Brazilian capital on January 8, 2023, when thousands of Bolsonaro’s supporters stormed the presidential palace, the Congress building and the Supreme Court. The investigation into these events, which resemble the attack by Trump supporters on the US Capitol two years earlier, is still ongoing.
