The federal government, on behalf of the Brazilian State, publicly apologized to the black population for the enslavement of black people and its effects. The message also highlights the need to combat racial discrimination in the country.
“The Union publicly apologizes for the enslavement of black people, as well as its effects. It recognizes that it is necessary to make efforts to combat racial discrimination and promote the emancipation of black Brazilian people. Finally, it is committed to enhancing the focus on creating public policies for this purpose”, says the message read by the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, at an event this Thursday (21), in Brasília (DF).
During the event, the Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Macaé Evaristo, recalled the struggle of the black population for freedom, equality and the achievement of rights. For her, recognition is the result of the struggle and effective actions of many actors in the black movement.

“In this path of struggle, which is abolitionist, in which we fought and continue to fight for freedom, we are taking very important steps every day. This memory of more than 300 years of slavery does not end on May 13th, because May 14th begins with the total abandonment of the black population in the country”, he observed.
The Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco, referred to the memory of her sister, councilor Marielle Franco, murdered in 2018.
“In addition to the apology, in the year 2024, we had the conviction of my sister’s killers. It’s not normal every day and every moment for us to have to deal with these ailments and pains. These are enormous challenges and, therefore, it is important for us to think about this collective work, concrete collective work”, said Anielle.
