Serbia is ready for membership in the European Union, however, this process slows down the use of the double subway against him, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said in an interview published on Friday for Serbian state television RTS.
According to Fico, Slovakia’s experience shows that it is it is necessary to make decisions in the interests of citizens and not to make the mistakes that some countries made before joining the EU.
At the same time, the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic spoke in favor of the possible establishment of a cooperation format similar to the V4 grouping between Slovakia, Hungary and Serbia. He highlighted the communication with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučič and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, which, according to him, is good because all three are in agreement and promote “sovereign policy”.
He further praised the Serbian political leadership for what Belgrade has done to protect the borders of the European Union. In the course of next year, when Slovakia will preside over the Vyšehrad Four, it wants to open a discussion on the accession of Serbia and the creation of the V5 format as soon as possible, Fico announced.
He also spoke in favor of cooperation with Serbia in the field of nuclear energy. As he added, the Slovak Republic is ready to transfer to Serbia its many years of experience in “building, modernizing and closing” nuclear power plants.
In an interview with RTS, Fico repeated that he is against the recognition of Kosovo’s independence, “because someone cannot just come and declare independence”. At the same time he assured that Serbia will have the full support of the Slovak Republic when joining the EU, however, he refused to speculate on the possible date of adoption due to the attitude of some “big players in the EU”.
However, he stated that Slovak soldiers expressed their will to return to the ranks of the NATO mission in Kosovo (KFOR). “It is very important for us, because we will receive objective information” about the events in Kosovo, which we cannot receive from the media, he noted. As he specified, it will be approximately 150 Slovak soldiers who will gradually become part of KFOR at the beginning of next year.
At the same time, Fico noted that, in his opinion, it will be a basic feature of the policy of the newly elected US President Donald Trump protection of US economic interests. This results in a somewhat tougher approach to China, but also less US involvement in various conflicts, he added. According to Fico, Trump will play a decisive role in the development of the situation in Ukraine.
Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic at the same time for Serbian television confirmed his intention to travel together with Vučič in May 2025 at the invitation of Russia to Moscow on the occasion of Victory over Fascism Day.
