After a series of meetings of the the federal government resumed its activities in the states and launched last Thursday (21) the program to optimize highway concession contracts. This initiative, which aims to improve road transport infrastructure by 2026, foresees investments of 110 billion reais. Entitled “Road Concession Contract Optimization Program”, the announcement was made at an event at Palácio do Planalto, highlighting the importance of the actions of the . The program, which has been in force for around a year and a half, seeks to review concession contracts considered problematic, both in technical and financial terms.
The optimization program includes the duplication of 1,5000 km of highways, the addition of 436 km of lanes and the construction of 16 rest points. According to the Ministry of Transport, these works have the potential to generate approximately 1.6 million direct and indirect jobs. Among the problematic contracts, considered stressed, are works that have been stopped or delayed, some dating back to the 1990s.
Since the beginning of the government, 14 contracts related to highways in 13 Brazilian states have already been guaranteed. Optimization differs from re-bidding, as it allows works to begin within 30 days of signing amendments, with the adjustment of the toll rate only occurring after the works are completed. Currently, 95% of the population uses highways to travel, and 65% of all products consumed in the country are transported via these roads.
