Mauro Mendes said that Brazilians should stop buying at online markets; statement came after CEO said he will no longer buy meat produced in Mercosur

The governor of Mato Grosso, (União Brasil), suggested a boycott after the CEO of the French market chain, Alexandre Bompard, said he would no longer buy meat produced in Mercosur countries.

In a post on his Instagram profile this Thursday (November 21, 2024), the governor of Mato Grosso said that he will no longer buy from supermarket chain stores and asked the population to do the same to “to honor the country”.

“We respect Carrefour’s right to select its suppliers. However, we Brazilians also have the right to buy from whoever we want. If Brazil is not good enough to sell meat to them, then this company should not be well regarded here”, declared Mauro Mendes.

Still in the video, the governor said that the boycott is happening because French producers are unable to compete with Brazilian agribusiness. He also criticized the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. He said that the environmentalist speech of the Chief Executive “it’s nothing more than idle talk”.

“It is clear that this talk by the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, and many environmentalists who claim to defend the environment is nothing more than idle talk. Basically, they want to use the environment to create barriers against Brazilian agribusiness and other countries here in South America”he stated.

Carrefour suspended the purchase of South American products because they allegedly did not meet French requirements and standards, which has caused stress among French producers, who are against the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union.

Bompard’s decision exclusively affects the market network in France. Other brand establishments will not stop selling South American meat.

The boycott is yet another sign that the Mercosur-European Union agreement is unlikely to prosper. The negotiation process is extremely criticized by European farmers, who fear the entry of more competitive South American products into the market.
