There was a time when zebra cake was present on almost every Polish table. Housewives exchanged recipes for this delicacy at a time when there was no Internet. Easy to prepare and beautiful looking, this cake will be a nice ending to every Sunday dinner.

Zebra cake is a two-colored cake whose name comes from its characteristic stripesbringing to mind an African animal. Although cocoa was sometimes hard to come by in the times of the Polish People’s Republic, zebra was incredibly fashionable back then. Easy to prepare, it did not require the use of butter, which was not always a delicacy at that time. No wonder its popularity carried over into the 1990s. The advantage of zebra cake is that it is difficult to mess up. In fact, it’s a simple recipe, the secret of which lies in two colors that are very easy to obtain. Today, when we are all busy, the zebra is coming back into favor again. In a few moments, it fills the entire house with a sweet, tempting scent.

Ingredients:

  • 5 eggs,
  • 1.5 cups of sugar,
  • a glass of sparkling mineral water,
  • a glass of oil,
  • 3 cups of cake flour + 2 tablespoons of flour,
  • 2 tablespoons of cocoa,
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder,
  • margarine for greasing the baking tray,
  • a spoonful of breadcrumbs.

Preparation:

Separate the egg whites from the yolks, then beat the egg whites with sugar until foamy. Add sugar to the foam gradually. Then add the yolks to the foam, mixing constantly. Pour in the oil, add baking powder and flour and continue mixing everything. Finally, add sparkling water and mix everything thoroughly. Now it’s time to make a zebra out of the dough. To do this, divide them into two parts, add cocoa to one and a spoonful of flour to the other and mix thoroughly. Grease a round baking tray with a diameter of 26 cm with margarine and sprinkle with breadcrumbs. Alternately, pour the light and dark dough onto the baking tray using two spoons. Bake at 180 degrees for about 50 – 55 minutes.
