The presidency, led by (União Brasil), decided to interfere in the distribution of councilors’ offices after reports of requests for money among members of the House, according to the Panel.
On October 9, shortly after the first round of the , the Board of Directors of the Chamber published an act in which it determines that the exchanges and distribution of offices for the councilors who will remain in the House and for those who will begin their mandates “will be carried out by the Presidency, upon request”.
Before this decision, the distribution took place through agreements between councilors who were at the end of their term and those who were about to start – that is, those who were leaving appointed their successors in the offices.
However, the House leadership received reports of cases in which councilors were asking for money in exchange for these nominations. Part of the resources would be to reimburse expenses for furniture in the offices, such as custom furniture. Another part would be due to preference in the nomination.
The offices in the City Council are different from each other — some are larger, others have private bathrooms and there are also those with direct access to the private elevator and views of Praça da Bandeira.
With the act, nominations can still be made, but will now be evaluated by the President of the Chamber. According to the column, the idea is for there to be a type of mediation between current office holders and interested parties.
According to the column, some analysis criteria have already been established, such as accessibility (for elderly councilors or those with mobility difficulties) and gender (offices with bathrooms will be designated preferably for women).
