The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans)defended Jair Bolsonaro (PL) this Thursday (21) after the former president was indicted by the Federal Police for crimes related to an alleged coup d’état. In statements on social media, Tarcísio stated that “there is a widespread narrative against President Jair Bolsonaro and that it lacks evidence” and asked that the investigation reveal “the truth of the facts”.
While some of Bolsonaro’s allies adopted a more critical tone against the institutions involved in the investigation, Tarcísio sought a moderate stance, without direct attacks on the Federal Police or the Federal Supreme Court (STF). He reinforced the importance of a responsible investigation into the accusations against the former president.
“The president respected the result of the election and the inauguration took place in full normality and respect for democracy. That the ongoing investigation be carried out in order to bring to light the truth of the facts”, declared the governor.

Tarcísio, who was Minister of Infrastructure during the Bolsonaro government, is considered one of the main names on the right for the 2026 presidential elections. Despite this, he has indicated that he prefers to seek re-election in São Paulo, where his candidacy would be safer.
