North Korean leader Kim Jong-un accused the United States of increasing tensions and provocations. He added that the Korean Peninsula has never been exposed to such a risk of nuclear war as it is now. This was reported by the North Korean news agency KCNA on Friday, TASR reports, according to Reuters and Jonhap.
“We have already gone as far as we could in the negotiations with the United States, but what we have seen from the results is not the great power’s willingness to co-exist, but its thorough power position and aggressive and hostile policy towards us, which he can never change,” Kim said Thursday in his speech at a military parade in Pyongyang.
During the first administration of the newly elected US President Donald Trump, the North Korean leader met with him three times, in Singapore, Hanoi and on the Korean border, Reuters reminds. However, they never achieved any concrete result. This was due to differences between US calls for North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons and Kim’s demands for sanctions relief.
Trump has long highlighted his ties to the North Korean leader. Last month, he declared that the US and the DPRK would fight a nuclear war that would kill millions of people, but he stopped it thanks to their relationship.
On Thursday, Kim called for the development and modernization of weapons to be “ultra-modern.” He vowed to continue developing defense capabilities to strengthen the DPRK’s strategic position.
According to him, the United States is strengthening military alliances and deploying strategic weapons aimed at the DPRK. “(North Korea) realizes in light of this fact every day and every hour that achieving the strongest military capabilities is the only way to maintain peace and ensure a firm guarantee of security and development,” Kim said.
North Korea is currently criticized by several countries. The reason is its deepening military cooperation with Russia. The DPRK has sent more than 10,000 soldiers to Russia to help in its military campaign in Ukraine.
North Korea’s leader last week called on the military to improve its war-fighting capabilities. He accused the US and its allies of fueling tensions to “the worst phase in history”.
