Trump is against the press freedom bill

US President-elect criticized proposal that would give journalists greater protection against online violence and harassment

United States President-elect Donald Trump (Republican) has called on Republicans to reject a bipartisan bill that would give American journalists greater protections under the guise of press freedom.

In a post on your profile Truth Socialon Wednesday (Nov 20, 2024), Trump wrote: “REPUBLICANS MUST KILL THIS BILL!”.

In the publication, Trump refers to an interview by the CEO of the Committee to Protect Journalists, Jodie Ginsberg, to the North American broadcaster . At the time, Ginsberg he spoke on “political divisions that threaten bill to protect press freedom”.

In the video, Ginsberg explains that the bipartisan legislation, supported by the Committee, aims to protect healthcare professionals “threats of online violence and harassment” which, according to her, “has become routine in recent years”.

After November 5, the Committee had issued a statement warning of a “hostile climate for press freedom” in the Republican’s 2nd term.

The CEO also emphasized the duty of journalists to keep people informed and hold the government accountable when necessary. “The bill that protects professionals from having to reveal their sources would help in this effort”.

Press law

O or press law, reported to the US House of Representatives on May 12, 2023, aims to protect journalists from government spying and other interference.

The bill states that the government should not force journalists and telecommunications service providers to disclose protected information. These include: identification of sources, communication content, documents or information obtained in the course of your work. There is an exception for special circumstances, such as preventing terrorism or imminent violence.
