The University of Algarve (UAlg) was the target of a cyber attack, in which personal data from candidates, students and employees was extracted, but the problem did not interrupt academic activities, the academy reported this Friday.
In a statement, UAlg states that the attack on the management IT system occurred between November 14th and 19th, with the threat having been eliminated since 8pm on Tuesday, after the system was corrected.
“During the period in which [o ciberataque] personal data of some members of the academic community (candidates, students and employees) were exfiltrated”, highlights the university.
According to UAlg, the cyber attack “did not equally extract all personal data”, namely email addresses, telephone contacts, names and bank identification numbers (IBAN).
In the note, the academy indicates that it has alerted affected people about the necessary measures that must be taken to protect themselves, complying with the obligations of the General Data Protection Regulation.
According to the Algarve university, “regular activities were never interrupted, particularly teaching and research”.
The cyberattack was reported to the police authorities and the National Cybersecurity Center (CNCS), Data Protection Commission (CNPD).
It regrets what happened and “the possible inconveniences that may arise from it” for those affected, ensuring that it remains committed to maintaining the highest level of information security for members of the academic community.
