House where Fernando Careca was hiding (2010)
Fernando “Careca” and Fábio “Cigano” will meet again in Monsanto’s special security chain. So far, only Portuguese fugitives have been caught. Fernando was in a remote village and even did odd jobs with his neighbors.

Commonly known as Fernando “Careca”, the fugitive was in a shack, in a village called Castanheira de Chãin the municipality of Montalegre (Vila Real).
The inmate still tried to escape, but was surrounded by 40 police officers who did not allow him to escape.
“It felt like war. There were soldiers with their faces covered everywhere. They hammered that door every time, and we all woke up. There are never noises like that here in the village”, a resident reported to .
From what the same newspaper managed to find out, Fernando “Careca” arrived in that Trás-os-Montes town with less than 100 inhabitants, on November 10th, with the help from a Venezuelan citizen – now wanted by the police.
The fugitive took up residence in the house of a Spaniard with no ties to the village and whose house had been uninhabited for a year, claiming to be his son. brother-in-law.

Despite being discreethaving only gone out three times to buy bread, the villagers described Fernando as friendly and polite.

José Diasfrom Castanheira de Chã, told the morning newspaper that he had already commented, at a meeting in São Martinho, that he could be one of the fugitives from Vale de Judeus, but no one listened to him.
“I said that he seemed to me to be one of the fugitives from the Vale de Judeus prison. Nobody believed it because nobody thought a man like that would hide in a village as small as ours.“, he confessed.
Reunited with Fábio Cigano
The National Counterterrorism Unit (UNCT) of the Judiciary Police (PJ) confirmed, this Friday, that Fernando “Careca” will serve the rest of his sentence in Monsantoin the only high security prison in Portugal – where he also goes.
Fábio Loureiro – the first of the five fugitives to be caught in Morocco on the day – is expected to be extradited in the next few days to Portugal, completing the reunion of “escape companions”.
On social media, internet users ‘don’t forgive’ and never tire of highlighting that “the tugas were the first to be caught”.
The other three inmates – all foreigners – remain on the run:
