A discovered that the Bolsonarists’ coup in 2022 included an assassination plan for , Alckmin and .
The plan was drawn up by General Mário Fernandes, who worked in the General Secretariat of the Presidency. According to the PF, the plan was printed at Palácio do Planalto and presented to Jair at Palácio da Alvorada. Two days earlier, Bolsonaro had presented the draft of the coup to the heads of the .
The plan called for the recruitment of six assassins, for whom six new cell phones were to be provided. The police discovered that, in the following days, six soldiers, with newly purchased cell phones, followed Alexandre de Moraes. The scammers’ messages show that the attack was aborted at the last minute because a session was suspended.
That is: it wasn’t just planning. The execution began, but was interrupted for reasons beyond the control of the criminals.
It was all part of the same movement: Bolsonaro was trying to convince the military leaders, the black kids were planning the murders, Bolsonaro politicians camped out at the barracks doors were trying to create a wave of popular support for the coup. The PF investigation shows that General Fernandes, author of the assassination plan, was one of the main articulators between the Planalto, the campers, the truck drivers and the agribusiness group.
Some analysts say that Bolsonaro’s coup never had a chance of succeeding because he never had the support network that funded the 64 coup.
The difference is truly remarkable: Bolsonaro had just been defeated at the polls. Lula was an elected president, not a vice president who came to power because the president resigned. The Brazilian media never supported Bolsonaro as they supported the coup plotters of 64. This time they opposed the coup.
But this only means that, for the Bolsonarist coup to succeed, it would have to be much more violent than the one in 1964.
This is why other South American dictatorships were more violent than the Brazilian one: because they faced more opposition. Does anyone doubt that Jair “I’m not a gravedigger” Bolsonaro would have the courage to order a bloodbath?
Jango did not resist the coup to avoid a civil war. Jair tried the coup knowing it would start one. A coup colonel cited by the PF clearly says: “Is there going to be a civil war? It’s going to happen. I’m sure it’s going to happen.”
From now on, this is it: if you ally yourself with Bolsonarism, you are allying yourself with the bandits who lost the election and tried to kill those who won to start a civil war.
When you read the headline “Bolsonaro nominated Nunes’ vice-president”, hear “Gang that tried to kill Lula and Alckmin to start civil war appointed Nunes’ vice-president”. When you read “Tarcísio defends Bolsonaro”, listen to “Tarcísio defends gang of murderers who lost the election and tried to start a civil war”.
This was the fight: allowing all these people to continue conspiring in public to kill Brazilians.
It’s always possible that Jair’s killers can get an amnesty from the thieves in the center. But one thing is certain: that noise you heard on Thursday, when the Federal Police indicted Jair and his accomplices, was the sound of institutions working. Working beautifully.
