The Federal Police investigation into Father José Eduardo de Oliveira e Silva, which culminated in his death, led Bolsonaro supporters to draw comparisons with Nicaragua, a country that persecutes religious people.

On November 8, the former president criticized the search and seizure action against the priest on a social network, who also gave a statement to the PF.

The real objective, say Bolsonarists, would be to force the priest to report his relationship with other defendants. But this would imply, according to them, a breach of confidentiality between religious and faithful, in addition to violating a diplomatic agreement between Brazil and the Vatican to protect the work of the clergy.

“Brazil cannot follow the same path as it persecutes, arrests and exiles religious leaders it considers hostile to its regime,” said the former president.

According to the PF, the priest, from the Diocese of Osasco, has links with other defendants in the plot and. He denies any type of involvement.

When contacted, the Vatican embassy in Brazil and the CNBB (National Conference of Brazilian Bishops) did not respond.
