This Saturday (23), General Walter Braga Netto, former Minister of Defense and the Civil House of said he was one of the few to maintain loyalty to the former president. Indicted by the Federal Police (PF) in an investigation investigating an attempted coup d’état after the 2022 elections, the military man denied having handled the plan. “It was never a coup, much less a plan to murder someone. Now part of the press comes up with this fanciful and absurd thesis of a “coup within a coup”. Let there be creativity”, wrote Braga Netto, on his profile on X (formerly Twitter), when publishing a note in his defense.
The document, signed by Braga Netto’s lawyers, says that the former minister “always excelled in ethical and moral correctness in the search for legal and constitutional solutions” and lists positions he held, such as intervenor in Rio de Janeiro’s Public Security in the Michel Temer government, in addition to posts in the Army. “Remember, also, that during the last government he was one of the few, among civilians and military, who maintained loyalty to President Bolsonaro until the end of the government, in December 2022 and maintains it to this day, out of belief in the same values and non-negotiable principles”, states another part of the note.
Braga Netto’s defense says they believe that “observance of the rites of due legal process” will clarify the truth of the facts and the responsibilities of each of those involved in the PF investigations. Last Thursday, Braga Netto, Bolsonaro and 35 other people were indicted for attempting a coup d’état in 2022 to prevent the inauguration of then-elected president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The PF attributes direct involvement to Braga Netto in the action of black kids mobilized for Operation Punhal Verde e Amarelo, a mission orchestrated to kill Lula, the then elected vice-president Geraldo Alckmin and minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF ), then president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).
According to the the mission that even employed official Force vehicles was agreed at a meeting at Braga Netto’s house. The clandestine group called Operation “Copa 2022” the monitoring of Moraes on December 15 of that year – 16 days before Lula’s inauguration.
