Most of us are already used to monitoring installed in public places and intended for our safety. It’s a great way to settle a dispute, check who is at fault for an accident, or find a thief.
However, some privately install cameras, for example, in front of the doors of apartments in a block of flats and carefully check what is happening in the stairwell and who is passing by. Is it even allowed? What are the rules for that?

More and more people decide to install surveillance cameras on their own. Of course, we can do whatever we want within our own property, and no one will prohibit us from taking greater care of our own safety and the safety of household members.
However, if you are tempted to place the device in a place that extends beyond our private property, it is worth checking the applicable regulations in advance. Before installing a camera system, thorough preparation and compliance with legal regulations is essential. Owners cannot place cameras arbitrarily; they must proceed according to § 14b par. 1 letter n) of Act no. 182/1993 Coll. on the ownership of apartments and non-residential premises. This law requires the installation of a camera system to be approved by a supermajority of all owners at a meeting, assembly or by written ballot.
In addition, it is necessary to elaborate Assessment of the impact on personal data protection. This document contains detailed information about the nature of the apartment building, the software used, data security, the purposes of processing and the preventive measures taken to ensure protection against data leakage.
Recordings cannot be a carrier of personal data and the image must be recorded in accordance with the applicable provisions of the GDPR. Every place where there is monitoring must also be clearly marked so that every passer-by knows about it.
Where is it not possible to install cameras? Better forget about these places
It is worth knowing that not every place has the right to install surveillance cameras. Bathrooms and toilets are especially prohibited, as recordings could violate privacy. The same applies to changing rooms in shops, medical offices, beauty salons and spas. The camera cannot be placed in places where confidential services are provided (e.g. law and notary offices).
