At Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo, a scenario of suffering and human rights violations persists. In a recent audio sent to ContilNet On the afternoon of this Friday (22), a woman who prefers not to be identified reports demonstrations by unaccepted immigrants who, desperate, call for refuge and better treatment conditions.
“Even without strength, I have to report this. There is now a demonstration by foreigners inside the airport. They are calling on the Federal Police to give them refuge. This doesn’t smell good to me. There may be retaliation from the police”, says the woman in the audio. She highlights the fear that police repression will intensify the suffering of refugees.
Among the revelations, the source mentions alleged manipulations in the Federal Police’s inadmissible lists. A specific case, of an immigrant whose entry was registered on a different date than that presented in official documents, reinforces suspicions of irregularities.
“Interestingly, the delegate stated that he was not on the area’s list of inadmissibles, but he is. The official list of the Federal Police itself was leaked by error”, he denounces.
The source also cites mysterious disappearances of immigrants during the early hours of the morning, when surveillance is reduced. According to her, “a boy left this week between four and five in the morning, without leaving a trace”.
These irregularities would have been facilitated by a lawyer who, according to the woman, has a history of involvement in human trafficking, although he was acquitted in a previous investigation.
These new reports add to a series of recent allegations.
Lawyers such as Yara Ramthor and Ellen Dias warned of serious human rights violations there. Among the situations reported are physical attacks, humiliation, threats of deportation and lack of medical assistance.
One of the most serious cases was that of an African refugee, attacked by Federal Police agents, who suffered injuries to the pelvic region.
Other refugees also reported situations of extreme vulnerability, such as hunger, cold and illness, without any support. According to lawyers, many of these people face the risk of torture or death in their countries of origin.
Another complaint points to flaws in the Sisconare digital system, which should speed up asylum requests, but has hampered assistance to immigrants.
Furthermore, illegal deportations are carried out during the night, without immigrants having access to basic legal guarantees. Lawyer Yara Ramthor accuses the Brazilian government of disrespecting the Migration Law and international human rights treaties.
The situation has drawn the attention of international organizations. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights has been contacted, and there is pressure for the case to be taken to the International Criminal Court. For Yara, “systematic violations constitute crimes against humanity”.
