Chavez-DeRemer was elected to Congress in 2022, but lost the election in November.

Newly elected US President Donald Trump has chosen Republican congresswoman Lori Chavez-DeRemer from Oregon as his candidate for the post of head of the Department of Labor. TASR took over the report from the AP agency.

She received strong support from union members in her constituency

Chavez-DeRemer, who was elected to Congress in 2022, narrowly lost her bid for re-election in November when she was defeated by Democrat Janelle Bynum. In the election, however, she received strong support from union members in her constituency.

“Lori’s strong support from the business and labor communities will ensure that the Department of Labor will be able to unite Americans of all walks of life behind our agenda for unprecedented national success – to make America richer, more successful, stronger and more prosperous than ever before!” Trump said in a statement.

As potential labor secretary, Chavez-DeRemer would oversee the Labor Department’s staffing, budget and, among other things, set priorities that affect wages, health, safety and unionization, as well as employers’ rights to fire workers, the AP noted.
