The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, formalized this Friday (22) a request to the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) for R$ 1.3 billion from the Itaipu bonus to be used to reduce electricity tariffs . The proposal will be analyzed by Aneel next Tuesday (26).
The letter highlights that the value represents a significant resource to alleviate the costs of electricity consumers, contributing to improving families’ paying power and helping to control inflation.
The bonus is the result of a positive balance recorded in Itaipu’s Electricity Trading Account last year. If approved, the amount will be passed on to residential and rural consumers who consumed less than 350 kWh in at least one month of 2023, through credits on energy bills.
In the document, Silveira also highlighted the need for balance in defining the values of tariff flags. He argues that inadequate values can impact inflation and increase the final cost for consumers, while at the same time not promoting the necessary signals to adjust energy demand in times of rising costs.
“I reinforce the importance of defining balanced values for the tariff flags, sufficient to pay off current expenses resulting from unfavorable hydrological situations and indicate to the consumer the increase in costs so that they can issue appropriate signals to react to demand. Inadequate values, or even activations, have repercussion on the country’s inflation, considering the tariff increase provided by its application”, highlighted the document.
Originally, these resources were scheduled to be distributed in July. However, the process was suspended by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, which at the time was considering allocating the amount to families affected by the floods in Rio Grande do Sul.
