The senator (-RS), former vice-president of the Republic of (), stated that he was “no brainer” and rejected that the country had suffered an attempted coup after Lula’s (PT) victory.
The senator’s statement was given in the latest episode of his podcast, “Bom dia com Mourão”, published this Friday (22). This was Mourão’s first public demonstration after the revelation by Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and minister Alexandre de Moraes.
“We have a small group of military personnel, most of them reserve military personnel, who in theory put together a plan without any reason. I can’t even imagine it as an attempted coup. It’s important that people understand that an attempted coup has to be the expressive support of the Armed Forces”, he said.
Since the first information about the plans for Bolsonaro, even defeated, to remain in power — like —, the senator has sought to minimize the revelations with the argument that the ideas would either not be feasible or would not have military support.
When talking about the closure of the PF investigation into the case, the senator classified the plan as “braggadocio” and said that “there was no troop deployment”. Mourão also stated that the plan to kill Lula, Alckmin and Moraes was “unsuccessful”.
Army soldiers with training in special forces actually mobilized in December 2022 in the vicinity of addresses where Moraes was located with the aim of arresting, kidnapping or murdering him. The operation was aborted.
