Federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira (PL-MG) said that his party will have to “take action” in the event that the president of the Chamber, deputy Arthur Lira (PP-AL), does not publish the Amnesty PL for the defendants of January 8 to vote during December this year.
The PL supported the candidacy of Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB) for President of the Chamber in exchange for Lira putting the amnesty proposal to a vote before the end of his term. Lira has been working to elect Motta as her successor in command of the Legislative House.
Lira managed to gather the support of PL and PT to elect Motta. So far, only three parties are not with Motta: Avante, PSOL and Novo.
Representative Nikolas Ferreira has criticized the alliance between his party and the PT around Motta’s candidacy.
Nikolas denies his own candidacy for President of the Chamber
One of the possibilities raised by the press is that Nikolas could launch his own candidacy for President of the House to take a stand against Motta and Centrão.
The deputy denies his intention to run for office, but demands action from his party if Lira does not put the Amnesty PL to a vote next month.
“Obviously, this has to be discussed with President Bolsonaro, with the president of the PL, with the leader of the PL [na Câmara]. I think that, if the agreement is not fulfilled, we have to take another action. I don’t know if this is the case, to launch a candidate, but I believe that another attitude needs to be taken”, said the deputy in an interview with the newspaper Economic Value.
“My position is this, is to support him [Motta] for this reason. Wait to see if this will really happen until the end of Lira’s mandate, if this will really be fulfilled, because the agreement was until December”, he added.
Nikolas’ interview was published this Thursday (21), however, it was carried out days before the arrest of four military personnel and a federal police officer for an alleged plan to kill, in 2022, President Lula (PT), Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and Federal Supreme Court (STF) minister Alexandre de Moraes, and the indictment of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and 36 other people for alleged attempted coup d’état.
“They are talking [de candidatura própria] because it’s crazy, where did you hear about that? Where am I going to take a position of this magnitude without consulting people and, in short, without having a consensus? For me, no. People bet that I want protagonism, I don’t. I simply do the things I believe in,” said Nikolas.
Lira took Amnesty project from CCJ
At the end of October, Arthur Lira decided to withdraw the PL of amnesty for those arrested on January 8th (Bill 2858/22) from the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the House. The project report would be discussed the next day.
Lira’s decision occurred at a time when the opposition and government were working together to compete for the presidency of the Chamber.
Representative Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB) promised the PT that he would leave the amnesty project out of the electoral campaign in the Chamber. According to Motta, it would be up to Lira to resolve the matter by the end of this year.
The president of the PL, Valdemar Costa Neto, conditioned the party’s support to the candidacy of anyone who committed to the approval of the Amnesty PL.
