Not just a Christmas cactus. "Fishbones" also bloom beautifully

Epiphyllum anguliger, more commonly known as the zigzag cactus or fishbone cactus, is an exotic plantwhich is becoming more and more popular among potted flower lovers every year.

It has many advantages, including easy cultivation in a pot, uncomplicated care and, above all, – spectacular beauty – both its leaves and flowers, which are characterized by a wonderful scent.

The zigzag cactus is of Mexican origin. It comes from tropical forests. It attracts attention with its original long, wavy and slightly flattened shootswhich at first glance reminds some people of fish bones (hence it is called fishbone cactus in English).

However, the “cut” leaves are only the beginning of its advantages. It needs a few seasons to show its full beauty. But when it blooms, it will fill the whole house with the wonderful, intense scent of large white flowers up to 25 cm in diameterwhich can be observed at night.

Epiphyllum anguliger is not a picky species, but it needs specific conditions to developso that it can present its spectacular appearance in all its glory. It is worth transplanting it into a new pot every three years.

The zigzag cactus feels best in a bright location, but with slightly diffused light and fertile, permeable and humus-rich soil. (orchid soil will work great).

Caring for a zigzag cactus is not complicated. When it comes to watering, yes it is enough to water it once every 1.5 – 2 weeks, and in winter (when the plant goes dormant), this treatment can be even further limited to every 4-8 weeks.

The plant cannot stand in water, because then it will immediately start to rot. The zigzag cactus can be fertilized in the spring and summer season. It is worth giving him a nutrient containing a large amount of potassium.
