Pedro Lupion asks for respect for Brazilian producers; brand markets in France stopped purchasing meat from Mercosur
The president of the (Agricultural Parliamentary Front), the federal deputy, suggested on Friday (Nov 22) that the sector stop supplying meat to combat what he called “sealing” of Europeans.
The proposal came after the chain’s global president, Alexandre Bompard, on Wednesday (Nov 20) said he would no longer offer proteins produced in Mercosur countries in the brand’s stores in France.
“We do not accept and will not accept. If Brazilian meat is good for consumption in Carrefour stores and all its other companies here in Brazil, it is also good for Europe.”said Lupion on his Instagram profile.
The decision is a way of protesting the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur. The pact would create a trade flow of up to R$274 million in manufactured agricultural products, in addition to a common market of 780 million people.
“At no point does it refer to the quality of the Mercosur product, but only to a demand from the French agricultural sector, currently in a context of crisis”says Carrefour França.
The statement also explains that the measure will only be valid at points of sale in France, and does not change the activities of Carrefour stores in Brazil. “All other countries where the Carrefour Group operates, including Brazil and Argentina, continue to operate without any changes and can continue to purchase meat from Mercosur. In other countries, where there is a franchise model, there are also no changes”he states in a note.
The governor of Mato Grosso, Mauro Mendes (União Brasil) told Carrefour, in a video published last Thursday (21.Nov.2024) on his Instagram profile. “We respect Carrefour’s right to select its suppliers. However, we Brazilians also have the right to buy from whoever we want. If Brazil is not good enough to sell meat to them, then this company should not be well regarded here”declared Mauro Mendes.
