Agreement reached at COP29 “below what is necessary”

The governments of hundreds of countries have accepted annual climate financing of almost 290 billion euros for the poorest and most vulnerable countries. But the UN says they could have gone further.

The United Nations and various groups and governments believe that at the end of falls short of what is necessary.

It is, for many, an unambitious agreement. It is true that the richest countries agreed to triple financial aid to the poorest nations. From US$100 billion per year, to US$300 billion. In other words, almost R$290 billion. But even so, the value falls short of the expectations of the UN, most environmental groups and associations and, mainly, several governments.

Since the beginning of the conference, developing countries have demanded much more money to help them with the energy transition but also to face the problems caused by climate change.

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, considered that the agreement is essential to keep the 1.5°C limit for global warming alive.

But he also said he expected more, so that the world can respond to the scale of the great challenge it faces from climate change.

In a reaction on social media, António Guterres wrote that he expected more.

“I expected a more ambitious outcome – both in terms of financing and mitigation – to respond to the scale of the major challenge we face, but the agreement reached provides a foundation on which to build,” he wrote, later noting that the agreement has to be ” honored in full and in a timely manner.”

“I call on governments to do so, urgently. I congratulate all the delegates, young people and civil society representatives who came to Baku to promote maximum ambition and justice. My message to them: Keep it up. To ´@unitednations´ is with you. Our fight continues. And we will never give up”, added the secretary general.
